Have High Expectations

  • Have high expectations of both academic work and behavior.
  • Emphasize "code-switching."
  • Have clearly outlined classroom procedures.
  • Remind students frequently of your expectations.

Building Relationships

  • Ice Breakers
  • Real-life Connections
  • Informal Conversations
  • Parent Contact/ Contact with a person the student trusts
  • Share about yourself

Be respectful

  • Demand respect and model it too.
  • Be reasonable: "I understand ______ but ________"
  • Remember that their home culture might differ from yours.
  • Remember what it's like to be 16 or 17 years old.

Be Proactive

  • Nip bad behaviors in the bud. 
  • Establish a hierarchy of responses.
  • Don't be afraid of bargaining.
  • Offer specific and frequent praise.
  • Consider what is best for the most amount of people.

Reflect on your Management

  • Take time to evaluate what is working and what isn't
  • Come-to-Jesus talks
  • Don't be afraid to apologize
  • Don't be afraid to make new rules

Scenarios

  • We will go through a series of scenarios.
  • I want you to act out the scenario.
  • You will then walk us through your thought process.
  • I will tell you what I did.
  • We will evaluate each situation and BM strategy.
