Learning Theory

What is Behaviorism?

The definition is: Behavior that is explained in terms of conditioning. Observable behavior that is shaped through positive or negative reinforcement and that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns.

Behaviorism's goal is to explain and understand the behavior and what action needs to be used to modify it. For example reward/punishment.

JOHN B. WATSON

John B. Watson was the person who coined the term "Behaviorism" in 1913.
He was influenced by Ivan Pavlov, who studied animals and their response to conditioning. (Pavlov's Dog)
Watson's earlier research he used animal subjects and later studied human behaviors and emotions at Johns Hopkins University.
He wanted to develop techniques to allow him to `condition and control the emotions of human subjects.
