Ben Cohen

  • Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 18, 1951.
  • Met Jerry Greenfield in middle school and graduated with him.
  • Attended college, but decided to drop out.
  • Named Small Business Man of the Year from Reagan with Greenfield in 1988.
Cohen and Greenfield took a 5$ correspondence course in ice cream making with Greenfield after working several odd jobs leading up to the decision to establish an ice cream shop.
Both worked in ice cream shops while in high school and in their college years.

Roles of Entrepreneurs

  • Innovator- developed over 100 flavors of ice cream.
  • Risk taker- branched out from just ice cream through other products.
  • Spark plug- energized the company by always including faculty in decisions.
  • Strategist- made decisions based on how it would affect society.
Innovators make new ideas into realities providing consumers with what they want (I.e. lots of new flavors of ice cream).
Risk takers always take chances to see if they can better their company in the long run. Both took chances by branching into new markets by making new products like Greek frozen yogurt or Sorbet.
Spark plug- supplies the energy to continue the company
Strategist- always makes the decisions and decides what's best for the company. They always aimed to keep the social aspect of their decisions positive.
For example, they would create their ice cream using hormone free milk and aimed to reduce dairy waste.

Characteristics of Entrepreneurs

  • Ambition- Ben and Jerry still make decisions to this day.
  • Self-Confidence- the company fought through hard competition.
  • Taking Risks- discovering new flavors and selling them to the people.
  • Energy & Self-Discipline- Philanthropic efforts alongside the business.
Ambition is when you have the motivation to continue your work through all else. Ben and Jerry are still active in the decision making of the company although they have stepped down.
Self-confidence is believing you can carry out your task to the best of your ability. Cohen and Greenfield persevered through the hard competition brought upon by Haagen-daz and Pillsbury during the mid-80s.
Taking risks was something that Ben and Jerry did a lot. They developed so many flavors and fix-ins with their ice cream that it is what they are especially known for today.
Energy & Self-Discipline- They both are huge philanthropists, helping out in the community wherever they can while still running the business during the early years before handing it over to someone else.

CHARACTERISTICS of Entrepreneurs

  • Perseverance- both started this company despite setbacks.
  • Problem-solving ability- started selling pints when Winter came around.
  • Organizational skill- Organized the Ben and Jerry's Foundation
  • Ability to motivate others- Contributed to society and community
Perseverance is huge in both of their lives. They both failed at what they originally wanted to be, but succeeded greatly at starting their own ice cream shop, and without their perseverance, it wouldn't have happened.
The duo began selling pints to mom and pop shops around the area when they couldn't get enough business during the winter time, demonstrating great problem-solving ability.
Organizational skills- They both got the Ben and Jerry's foundation together even while running the store all at the same time.
Through their philanthropic efforts, they got involved into their community and helped many projects do the best they could all for the greater good.
