PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ANCIENT ROME

  • People in rome
  • There were two classes of people in rome
  • PLebians and patricians, plebians were the poor people,patricians were the rich class
  • Both groups were expected to have equal rights
  • The word republic comes from two latin words 'Res publica'

ROMAN ARMY

  • They were allowed sell any prisoners that they arrested as slaves
  • The army was divided into legions
  • There was about 5,000 soldiers in a legion
  • They had to serve for 16 years
  • The back up army was called the auxilia

DAILY LIFE

  • The only way you could go on the streets in the day was by foot
  • The main market was held in the forum
  • Going through the forum was the via sacra(holy road)
  • When the romans won a war the marched through the via sacra

ROMAN LIFESTYLE

  • Most of the rich people lived in the hills around rome
  • The plebeians lived tightly packed together in blocks of flats
  • The houses of patricians were called villas
  • The plebeians homes were called insulae
  • Men often beat their children and wives

EDUCATION

  • Most children did not go to school, they had to start work in their teens
  • Mothers taught their daughters how to manage a household
  • Most boys went to school, others were taught by highly educated slaves
  • They practised oratory
  • This is the art of public speaking

ROMAN DIET

  • The romans didnt eat much during the day
  • For breakfast they had bread dipped in wine
  • For lunch they had cold foods such as salad or bread
  • Main courses were usually boiled meats
