  • Benjamin was born a free man.
  • His mother and father were Mary and Robert

BENJAMIN'S EDUCATION

  • Benjamin was mostly self-taught
  • He learned to read and write from his grandmother
  • At an early age showed interest in mathematics and mechanics
  • Briefly attended a school taught by Quakers

SOME HISTORY OF HIS FAMILY

  • Molly was a dairy milker
  • She married her own slave
  • Benjamin's mother also married a slave

SOME MORE HISTORY

  • Benjamin's grandfathers name was originally Banneky
  • The reason Mary was free was because her mother was free
  • Benjamin's father was freed before he married Mary
  • He never married.

BENJAMIN'S INVENTIONS

  • He invented the first American watch
  • Published almanac's for six years.

  • Carved his watch out of wood
  • Used his neighbors pocket watch to draw the gears
  • Created first American clock

BENJAMIN'S ALMANACS

  • His almanacs were based on astronomy
  • And mathematics.

  • Eleven days after Thomas replied

THE ELLICOT BROTHERS

  • Benjamin was friends with George and Joseph Ellicot
  • They introduced him to astronomy.
  • He then predicted a solar eclipse which was accurate

BENJAMIN'S LATER LIFE

  • After his father died he took care of his family with his mother
  • After his mother died he inherited the tobacco farm
  • In his later life he started to learn to farm

  • He has two school's named after him
  • The Benjamin Banneker academic high school
  • And the Benjamin Banneker charter school
  • One of his greatest achievements was his clock

BENJAMIN'S DEATH

  • October 9th 1806
  • He died in his family's farm house.
  • On the day of his funeral his farm house was burned to the ground
