This slide show is about how the people of the Northern Rivers region of NSW came together to protect their land, water, freedom and democracy from gas exploration.
In January, 2014 Metgasco applied to do a test drill (Rosella E01) on a property 15km from Lismore on the Lismore/Kyogle Road. This was the latest event in the ongoing dispute between gas companies and locals.
One day in 2010 residents of Keerong heard the sound of drilling nearby.
Arrow Energy did a test well in the Keerrong Valley (north of Lismore on the Nimbin Road). Residents were concerned about the noise and trucks on the narrow roads.
They found information, formed groups and talked to the local council.

Local surveys were conducted door to door and the Southern Cross University conducted a survey in conjunction with Lismore council elections. An exit poll was conducted at Casino. Photo: Gasfield Free Northern Rivers https://www.flickr.com/photos/csgfreenorthernrivers/8675973305/
An action plan by Annie Kia, a local health worker, involved people signing up to lock gates, roads and communities culminating in a day of action all over the Far North Coast. Camp Liberty, with hundreds of protectors, was on adjoining land.
Camp Liberty had streets and protectors were required to get up early every morning. There were duty rosters for all camp activities and workshops on non-violent protest.
A sample of the people gathered to listen to speakers and show there support. This is Gate A, the main focus of protection. Metgasco had to do earthworks here to widen the entrance before the drilling rig could enter. Photo Gasfield Free Northern Rivers: https://www.flickr.com/photos/csgfreenorthernrivers/13905444605/

Metgasco say the gas is for NSW, drilling will cause no harm, and gas is conventional
In their submission, Metgasco specifically state that the gas is needed for NSW but other sources, including the industry lobby group, say it is for export. Gas companies try to reassure residents but there are many instances of accidents and environmental harm.
