When was the camp Opened?

  • Bergen-Belsen was established on April 15,1940
  • It was made by German Military Authorities
  • Until 1943, It was a Prisoner Of War (POW) camp

Where was it located?

  • It was located south of the towns of Bergen and Belsen
  • Located in Northern Germany
  • Located 11 miles north of Celle, Germany

How many Prisoners?

  • There was about 120,000 prisoners
  • It was only supposed to hold 10,000 prisoners
  • Mainly created to hold Jewish prisoners 
  • Two out of the eight sections were for girls

How many people died?

  • 95,000 people died 
  • Over 60,000 people died of just Incineration 
  • Among the people that died, Anne Frank was the most famous 

What work did they do?

  • They mostly didn't do work
  •  Waited to be transferred to other labor camps. 
  • From 1944-45, camp was an evacuation camp

How did they die?

  • The most common type was the incinerator.
  • common types of death: starvation and diseases
  • Anne Frank died of Typhus

How did they dispose the bodies?

  • They dug big holes and bulldozed the bodies into the holes.
  • Only about 10,000 bodies were unburied.

Who were the leaderS?

  • Adolf Haas was the leader in 1943
  • In 1944, Josef Kramer replaced him
  • Josef Kramer was nicknamed "The Beast"
  • Josef Kramer was Hung after the war

What happened after liberation?

  • Bergen-Belsen was Liberated in 1945
  • Over 18,000 people died after liberation.
  • Burned down Barracks for safety precaution 
  • Only a Graveyard is left of Bergen-Belsen
  • The Nazi's burned as many files as they could
