PROPERTIES OF BERYLLIUM

  • Beryllium is a metal with a high thermal conductivity
  • It does not have any reaction with water,
  • and is only flamable in powder form

DISCOVERY OF BERYLLIUM

  • Discovered by Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin
  • Thought that there was an unknown element in emeralds and beryl
  • 1828, chemist Friedrich Wölhler produced beryllium

OBTAINING BERYLLIUM TODAY

  • Mining Beryl and Emerald
  • Using a scientific process, they are used to make beryllium
  • Relatively rare today

USES FOR BERYLLIUM

  • Battery contacts and electrical connectors in phones
  • Housing fiber optic cables on sea floor
  • Used in medical field because it is transparent to xrays

  • Has a gray, steel like appearance
  • Sometimes round in its pure form
  • Solid matter at room temperature
