Emotional/psychological Journey
David McLean(grandfather) has had many moments in his life when he went through several emotions over a period of time, and so has DJ by the time his task is completed. Our whole life is an emotional journey. Also, David McLean and his grandson have been through a psychological journey. The grandfather had been through so much in life -- the fearsome days of war, the sacrifices, finding love again, starting a family, having children then grandchildren . DJ also evolved from an over-confident and arrogant teenager who didn't know how to accept failure to an understanding young man who learns to compromise and find the true meaning of life.
"...those were times of adventure, abandon, and excitement. It was where my soul was healed after the horror of the war, where I became able to live and love again and go on with life."
-- David McLean
"... It wasn't just the saddest day in your life, but one of the saddest in mine. I was powerless to protect either your mother or you or your brother from the pain. I saw you shed tears but you were so strong..."
-- David McLean
"I can only imagine what you must be feeling. I think I know what I would be feeling -- excitement, anticipation and a healthy dose of fear and doubt. Can I make to the top? Will the mountain defeat me or will I manage to subdue it long enough to reach the summit?"
-- David McLean
"Uhuru Point - The Highest Point In Africa. All the way to the top. I felt like crying. I felt like laughing. I just felt... so alive"
-- DJ
" I hope you have learned the joy of taking life as it comes, living in the moment, not thinking through at the end, but relishing the process and perhaps going polepole - going slowly along the path you travel."
- David McLean
"... I've always wondered if your greatest disadvantage was that you're so used to succeeding. Failure is good for the soul. While we aim for success, it is failure that defines us. Don't be afraid of failing. You need to accept it and understand that failing doesn't make you a failure. It merely makes you human."
-- David McLean
"... but life all happens so quickly. It seems like only moments ago that I was like you - a teenager. And then it all happened so fast, from boy to young man, to man, to father, to grandfather to, well, a memory."
-- David McLean
" There is a saying - if you wish to travel fast; travel alone but if you wish to travel far, travel together. You are part of a group of climbers , supported by a porter and led by a guide. Travel with them. That's important for the climb and in life. Don't leave people behind - not your mother, not your brother, not your cousins - on your life journey."
" When you look up, you'll see climbers further along the journey. When you look back you'll see those behind you. Don't pity those below or envy those above..."
-- David McLean
" Life is a journey, not a destination."
Universal message repeated by David Mclean
" Thank you for taking me with you on this trip - thanks to you, I finally have been between heaven and earth."
-- David Mclean
