PRESENTATION OUTLINE
"Beyond Discipline" (Alfie Kohn 2006) will talk about the discipline in schools today. He mentions what we are doing well and what we need to work on in terms of discipline and punishment.
THE TEACHER NEEDS TO BE IN CHARGE OF THE CLASSROOM:
- Not only structure, but extreme control is needed.
-Students must be tightly regulated in order to be productive.
Illogical Consequences:
- We prevent students from doing certain things with certain consequences.
- When student's are disturbing the class, we should talk to the class about it to evoke group pressure instead of the consequences we usually do.
PUNISHMENT CAN DELAY THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT:
-We typically discipline too much which can actually harm the students.
-We punish because it is how we were raised so it's quick and easy to do.
Positive Reinforcement
- When you think about this aspect of punishment it actually proves that human beings are only concerned about themselves.
- This shows that a child will only demonstrate kindness when a reward is given.
COMPLIANCE:
-Teaches students a bad lesson.
-It makes the student automatically be afraid of, or not like the person who punished them.
