HOW WE GOT THE BIBLE

MATERIALS USED TO RECORD o.t & N.t

  • OLD TESTAMENT (1500-400 BC):
  • papyrus, parchment, stone, ink, metal, amulets & pots
  • NEW TESTAMENT (AD 45-100):
  • Gutenberg's printing press, paper

1400Bc - 200BC

  • 1400-400: Old Testament books were written.
  • 500: O.T completion of Hebrew manuscripts, 39 books.
  • 450: O.T collected & arranged by a priest, Ezra.
  • 250-200: Septuagint produced in Greek translation.

1st century AD - 1000AD

  • 45-85: the books of the Greek N.T was written.
  • 90 & 118: the Council of Jamnia gives a final approval to the O.T.
  • 400: Jerome translates the Bible into Latin & becomes standard in medieval church.

1300AD - 1600AD

  • 1380-1382: John Wycliffe & helpers make 1st translation of the bible into English
  • 1455: Gutenberg's Latin bible was the 1st from the press.
  • 1525: William Tyndale makes the 1st translation of N.T, Greek to English.
  • 1538: Geneva Bible was organized by John Rogers, 1st Bible in public.
  • 1568: revision of the Great Bible is the Bishop's Bible.

1800AD - current

  • 1611: New King James Version of the Bible is made.
  • 1782: Robert Aitken's Bible was the first English bible.
  • 1808: Aitken's daughter, Jane printed the first Bible by a women.
  • 1885: Apocrypha was officially removed from the Buble leaving 66 books.
  • 2002: ESV, bridged the gap between accuracy of NASB & readability of NIV.
