Allusion- truthful sayings

Jesus was at the temple and the lame and blind came to be healed by Him. The children were shouting praises tomJesus which in turn made the priests angry. The priests asked Jesus if the heard what the children were saying. In return (referring to Psalms) Jesus said that the children learned how to speak the truth, such as telling of strengths and opposing enemies.

PHILISTINE

I & II SAMUEL
Allusion- hostile or indifferent to culture.

Many stories of the Philistines. A well known one is David and Goliath. It was a war between the Philistine army and Israel. The son of the king of Israel, David, came to check on his brothers and ended up volunteering to fight Goliath(a nine foot tall and wearing full armor), a Philistine. Goliath believed that all of Israel were servants and that after this war whoever loses will be the servants of the winner. David fought the giant with only a slingshot and stones he found a weakness in the armor and knocked the giant down and then killed him with the giants own sword.

SALT OF THE EARTH

MATTHEW 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet."

Allusion-Christians enhance and give meaning to life.

Jesus told a crowd to live godly lives. Salt can be another word for faith. Telling the crowd to keep their faith and not to lose it's the second half of this chapter is about spreading light or spreading their faith.

SCAPEGOAT

LEVITICUS 16:10
"But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat."

Allusion-a bearer if sins

The Lord told Moses to tell his brother Aaron of how to go about the Day of Atonement. He is to get two male goats for the sin offering and a ram for the burnt offering. The ram was a sin offering for himself. One of the goats was a sin offering for The Lord. And the last goat was the scapegoat for the others. The scapegoat held all of the sin of Israel and sent into the wilderness escaping death.

SODOM AND GOMORRAH

GENESIS
Allusion- punishment for wrongdoing

God was going to destroy these two cities because of their wickedness. He gave them a chance to stay if there was ten righteous people in them. A riot occurred and the cities were destroyed.

SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD

PROVERBS 13:24
"He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes."

Allusion- children need to be disciplined

It's in the Proverbs of Solomon, who was the King of Israel. There is no story to go along as these are just statements of what he believed as truth.
