Workshop Description: This workshop will address the difference between speaking a language and communication that looks and feels relatable to diverse communities and populations. In this interactive workshop, the presenter will discuss the needs and strengths around creating culturally responsive resources, and the benefit of having a working understanding of the importance of communication in and with diverse cultures and communities.

Be comfortable with being uncomfortable

• Speaking vs. communicating
• You can use speaking to communicate but not communicate when speaking.
• You can be bilingual w/out being bicultural (ex. k)
• Cultural competency vs. cultural humility.

When serving clients:

• Culture comes 1st
• Language comes 2nd.
• Culture is like a onion- has many layers.

The ability to work effectively across cultures in a way that acknowledges & respects the culture of the people we will serve.

Dismanting Homophobia & Transphobia in Latino Communities

Workshop Description: LGBTQ youth of color face disproportionate rates of sexual violence, bullying and harassment resulting in a range of negative health outcomes. In Latinx communities, machismo and religion can also contribute to homophobic attitudes creating an added barrier for youth to access support services. This workshop will focus on the role rape crisis centers, advocates, and all those who work with youth can play in creating inclusive spaces, LGBTQ culturally competent responses, as well as trauma informed advocacy and prevention services.

Workshop Description:

This is an introductory workshop on survivors of sexual assault in the LGBTQI community. It introduces to the viewer the different identities within the LGBTQ community and provides the necessary language and diction to address the transgender clients in Spanish. It will also provide statistics on sexual assault and partner violence in the LGBTQ community, as well as how to put all this into practice in our agencies.

• 15,000-50,000 Adult Trans (immigrants)
• 1 in 4 undocumented trans adult report physical assault in the workplace.
