Important Things

  • Comprehension is the reason for reading
  • Students must know the meaning of most words before they can understand what they are reading.
  • Phonics instruction is important because it helps students connect written letters and spoken words.
  • Fluency helps students understand what they are reading

Phonemic Awareness

  • Ability to notice and work with individual sounds in spoken words
  • Smallest parts in a word sound that makes a difference in the words meaning
  • Kids who have phonemic awareness skills are more likely to have an easier time learning how to spell, read, and write.
  • Children learn this best in small groups.
