Building an Empire with Software

His childhood

  • He was born and grew up in Seattle, Washington. (1)
  • His mom was a teacher and then stayed home with the kids. Later she introduced him to people in IBM.(1)
  • He seemed bored and withdrawn in school, and moved to a more challenging private school.(1)

  • He took advantage of opportunities like when he used a computer glitch to gain free computer time in school even he had his computer privaledges revoked for it.(1)

Challenges

  • He got into fights with his partner Paul Allen a lot. They had very different personalities. (1)
  • He and Paul Allen sued the new owner of MITS for rights to the software they wrote.(1)
  • Early computer enthusiasts apposed paying for software. (1)

Successes

  • He and Paul Allen built a very successful business in Microsoft by using each others strenghts. Allen was business and Gates was software. (1)
  • By keep the rights to his work (software) and being able to charge for software his company grew. (1)

  • He was a billionaire by 32. (1)
  • He was a millionaire by 23. (1)
  • Made windows 1-10 (for now)
  • Held a reputation of being a shrewd businessman. (1)

What he had to overcome

  • Going against the early computer enthusiests and selling software and not just giving it away. (1)
  • Behaviour issues (bored during class). He made a 1590 on his SAT.(1)
  • He reviewed every line of code before the companies software was shipped. (Hard work) (1)

People that inspired him

  • His mom. She died of breast cancer in 1994. (1)
  • Paul Allen's differences were very influencial in how the business grew.(1)
  • MITS president Roberts helped Allen and Gates by being a common enemy.(1)

His legacy

  • Microsoft.(2)
  • The Gates Foundation. He has pledged to leave his fortune to charity.(2)
  • The way we view software as a product and not just something included with the computer.(2)
