1ST AMENDMENT

2ND AMENDMENT

  • Protects the right to bare arms

3RD AMENDMENT

  • Prevents government from forcing homeowners to allow soldiers into the homes
  • For example, the revolutionary war, soldiers were allowed to invade private homes

4TH AMENDMENT

  • Unreasonable search and seizure
  • For example, without a warrant no snooping on private property.

5TH AMENDMENT

  • “I plead the fifth”
  • The right against self-incrimination

6TH AMENDMENT

  • Right to a speedy trial & public trial, or trial by an impartial jury
  • For example,we are all allowed to be represented by a lawyer, informed of the criminal charges against us, and a trial.

7TH AMENDMENT

  • Right to a jury trial
  • For example, non-criminal with a jury of local people

8TH AMENDMENT

  • Excessive bail, fines, and cruel or unusual punishment.
  • For example, you can’t charge a million dollar fine on littering.

  • We have other rights that are protected and not listed in the amendments.
  • For example, the right to resist oppression is not listed in the bill of rights, but it is one of our rights.

  • Federal government only has those powers delegated in the constitution.
  • For example, the federal government issue licenses or make traffic laws
