Binary Oppositions

Binary Oppsites

  • The code of oppositions refers to the narrative that relies on binary opposites. E.g. black v white, hot v cold, male v female, nature v civilisation, war v peace.
  • A binary opposition (also known as a binary system) is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. Binary opposition is the system by which, in language and thought, two theoretical opposites are strictly defined and set off against one another.

Twilight is an example of a film which portrays binary opposites. more recently in films binary oppositions have been created in a more complex, unusual way, exactly like twilight, where there has been a complicated plot of slowly unveiling the vampire vs werewolf opposition.
