EARLY CHILDHOOD

  • Born on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, India
  • His birth name is Eric Arthur Blair
  • His father was in the British Military and was stationed in India
  • His mother moved him to England for education in 1904

EDUCATION

  • Was shipped off to a Boarding school
  • Other students bullied him for having a bland personality
  • He read books since no one liked him
  • Orwell did well in school and was usually attending on scholarships
  • He observed that the rich were treated better than the poor

EARLY ADULTHOOD

  • He joined the India Imperial Police Force for 5 years
  • In 1927, he quit to become an Author
  • Orwell moved to Paris in order to pursue his dream
  • He worked many low-wage jobs in order to scrape by

Down and Out In Paris and London

  • Published in 1933
  • It was his first major book
  • He used the Pseudonym George Orwell
  • It was about his time as a struggling author

POLITICAL VIEWS

  • He started writing highly political books in the 30s
  • "Burmese Days" shows the darker parts of British colonialism (1934)
  • In 1936 he wrote about poverty and unemployment in N. Ireland
  • He switched from an Anarchist to a Socialist in the early 30s

SPANISH CIVIL WAR

  • Went to support a socialist movement
  • Got shot and developed tuberculosis
  • Became an anti- Stalin person during his time in Spain
  • Was charged with treason after leaving the country

  • Ended up being a propagandist
  • Hated being a propagandist so he quit
  • Became editor of a Socialist newspaper

ANIMAL FARM

  • The book was published in 1945
  • It was a satire of Soviet Russia
  • It showed Orwell's anti-Stalin views
  • His first big hit novel

"1984" TIL DEATH

  • Wrote "1984" in 1949
  • Dealt with government control
  • Showed how government control is a bad thing
  • Last book before dying from Tuberculosis in 1950
