JOHN WINTHROP

• John was chosen to be the governor of "a city upon a hill".
• John wanted to create a colony that would be a model for how God wanted people to live.

ANNE HUTCHINSON

• She was forced to leave Massachusetts so she created the settlement of Portsmouth .

ROGER WILLIAMS

• He was against colonist taking land from the natives.
• So he founded the settlement of Providence in what became Rhode Island.

WILLIAM PENN

• William started the colony of Pennsylvania .
• William got Delaware as a gift.

JAMES OGLETHORPE

• James was a general.
• He was sent to Georgia with debtors to help protect the other colonies.

JOHN CULPEPER

• The colonist led by John,took control of the government.
• The revolt became know as the Culpeper's Rebellion.

THOMAS HOOKER

• He was a minister who belived that each church should be independent.
• In 1636 he and about 100 followers founded the colony of Connecticut.

LORD BALTIMORE

• He got a charter to start a new colony for Catholics.
• He named it Maryland.
