DESERT BIOME: SALAR DE UYUNI, BOLIVIA

Barrel cactus
Grows in American deserts.Native Americans stewed this cactus into a cabbage like stew. Can grow up to the size of a man.

Joshua Tree
Gives off an unpleasant odor. Grows in the Mojave desert. Has two sets of root systems. The Native Americans used the bark to make bowls and canisters.

Chain Fruit Cholla
Shrubby type of cactus. Animals like the bighorn sheep rely on the fruit of this tree to survive. Can grow 15 feet tall.has pear shaped fruit.

Bobcat
15-20 pounds. Looks like a big house cat.almost went extinct a few years ago.eats rabbits and mice. Very fierce animal that can kill a deer. Lives on the ground or in trees and lives alone unless with a mate.

Desert Bighorn Sheep
They are a sub-species of a Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep.lives on or near mountains.eats grasses and can go three days without water. Live in North America.

Thorny Devil Lizard
The lizard can change colors from yellow to reddish brown. Found in Western Australia. Lives for 20 years. It is an endangered species. Eats ants and lived underground.

Weather
Dry desert are formed by high-pressure zones in which cold air descends. The heat evaporates the rain before it falls. Plants have adapted to lack water by using dew. The annual temperature of sand is 64 degrees.

Clothes
Not that much clothes is needed but enough to cover your skin so you don't get sunburnt. You might want to bring sunscreen to.

Patterns
Desert get about 1 inch of rain a year.there is not a lot of atmosphere to protect you from the radiation. In most desert it is very hot during the day and at night but in some desert it's very hot during the day and very cold during the nights.

Activities
Air gliding, dirt biking, dune riding, boat trips, different tours, mountain biking, hot springs, zip lining,swimming in pools or in the ocean, zoos, and animal refugee centers.you can also visit fish island which looks more like a desert than salar de uyuni.

Salt Lake
The salt in certain months of the year make the ground look invisible or like a mirror. This is the largest salt mine in the world. Only like this during the wet season.

Dangers
There are some people that die every year from tours because the tour leader does not have much experience so make sure you have a guide that knows the area and is experienced.

Cities
There are no big cities close to Salar De Uyuni but there are a few hotels almost completely made of salt blocks for accommodation.

Seasons
During the dry season the salt lake is normal and looks like a desert, but during the wet season the near by lake over fills and floods the salt lake, making it the largest mirror in the world.

Best time to visit
It snows there for a couple of months during July and August. The safest time to travel is April to May. The months to see the lake turn into a mirror is September to November.

Overview
So overall Salar de Uyuni is a great place to visit and there are a lot of things to do there but be sure to do your homework before visiting so you can find good safe tours. This is a once in a life time trip.
