PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OMNIVORE

  • An animal that feeds on both animal and vegetable substances
  • Examples include horses and hedgehogs
  • Fact: the teeth of omnivores are made to eat both plants & animals

  • An organism that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals
  • Examples are fungi or bacteria
  • Fact: most decomposers are microscopic

ECOSYSTEM

  • A community of organisms and its environment,
  • that functions as an ecological unit.
  • Examples include a tropical rainforest or a river

AUTOTROPH

  • An organism that is capable of self-nourishment by using inorganic materials as a source of nutrients.
  • Uses photosynthesis and chemosynthesis as a source of energy
  • Examples include plants, flowers, trees

HERBIVORE

  • An animal that feeds only on plants
  • In a food web, they are primary consumers
  • Examples include caribou and cows

SYMBIOSIS

  • The living together in association of 2 dissimilar organisms
  • Examples include parasitism and mutualism and commensalism
  • There are 3 main types of symbiosis

MIMICRY

  • The close external resemblance of an organism to another animal, plant, or inanimate object
  • Fact: mimicry can be used as a defense mechanism for some animals
  • Examples: insects, snakes, octopuses

PREDATION

  • The act of killing/eating/preying on other animals
  • For example a cat eating a rat.
  • Can range from any size predator and prey.

COMMENSALISM

  • relationship of 2 organisms of different species where one benefits whereas the other is unaffected.
  • It is a form of symbiosis
  • Examples include when barnacles attach to the skin of a whale

ORGANISM

  • A form of life composed by interdependent parts that maintains vital proccesses
  • Examples : a squirrel, a mosquito or a plant

HABITAT

  • The natural environment of an organism
  • A place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism
  • Examples include anywhere from a tree to a forest
