PLANTS

TAIGA HAS MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF DECIDEOUS TREES

BIRCH TREE

  • grows to 70 or 80 feet in height.
  • The paper birch has both male and female flowers called catkins.
  • You can identify this tree by its white bark which peels easily and is marked by narrow horizontal stripes
  • White birch trees can either have one slender stem or several stems.

SALLOW

  • Origin: Eastern Australian
  • Sallow is considered a local plant in some areas of Victoria
  • • Fruit contained within cylindrical pods, 10cm in length, sometimes constricted between the seeds
  • Botanical name: Acacia longifolia ssp. longifolia

ASPEN TREE

  • The Aspen tree is a treat for the senses
  • it is a popular pick among professional landscapers and homeowners
  • It is also known to be very beautiful
  • Aspen tree can grow to heights that range from 40 to 60 feet.
  • The canopy that can spread as wide as 30 feet.

ROWAN TREE

  • COMMON NAMES: Mountain Ash,Sorb Apple, Wiggin Tree,Quicken
  • Its bark and berries can be used to make medicine
  • PLACE OF ORIGIN: Britain and Ireland.
  • It also produces a large number of berries in autumn.
  • This tree Grown from seeds , dispersed by birds.

GREY ALDER

  • Origin: Europe and Asia
  • Grey alder is a medium-sized tree with a cone-shaped crown
  • Bark is smooth and grey with horizontal pores
  • But becomes rough as it ages
  • Fruits are nutlets borne in cone-like catkins that are green and closed while maturing.

SNOWSHOE HARE

  • They are forest-dwellers that prefer the thick cover of brushy undergrowth
  • They are primarily a northern species
  • Hares are a bit larger than rabbits
  • They are known for their large furry feet

WOLVERINE

  • Its the largest member of the weasel family
  • it can be found in artic and sub artic regions in Canada, Northern Europe, Russia and Siberia.
  • Its roughly the size of a medium dog
  • Wolverine is highly prized because its resistance to frost
  • Its five -toed paws helps it move quickly

LYNX

  • It is partof the small cat group
  • It is critically endangered
  • Their furs range from golden brown to an off-white color having spot
  • They have very good eyesight
  • Can spot a prey 250 ft away

ROE DEER

  • The height can range from Shoulder height of 60 to 75 cm
  • has an average body weight of anywhere between 40-70lbs
  • Its antlers are somewhat short and erect
  • The Roe Deer’s binomial name is Capreolus capreolus
  • You can see them at dawn and dusk

MOOSE

  • Male moose are called Bull Moose
  • Each year a moose grows bigger antlers than the year before.
  • They have bad eyesight
  • They have 32 teeth
  • Moose on average are 7 feet tall at the shoulders and 8.5 feet in length.

WEATHER

  • Temperatures can reach as low as -90° F in the winter
  • For six months out of the year, the temperature in the taiga biome is below freezing.

Summer is the best time to travel here so you can see all the beautiful animals but prepare for plenty of rain
