WHAT IS A BIOME

  • Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate (weather, temperature) animals and plants. There are terrestrial biomes (land) and aquatic biomes, both freshwater and marine.

TROPICAL RAINFOREST

  • Rainfall- 80 to 400 inches per year
  • Temperature- 70 to 85 degrees
  • Location- Asia, Africa, South America, and Central America

TROPICAL RAINFOREST

  • Animals- Parrots, Cheetahs, Monkeys, Snakes, and Frogs
  • Plants- Epiphytes, Bromeliads, Orchids, and Ferns
  • Interesting facts- Tropical Rainforest receive the most rainfall per year than any other biome in the world.

SAVANNA

  • Rainfall- 20 to 50 inches per year
  • Temperature- 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Location- Africa, South America, India, and Australia
  • Animals- Wildebeest, Warthog, Elephants, and Zebras
  • Plants- Rhodes grass, red oats oak, and lemon grass
  • Interesting facts- savannas are the only biome that is mostly made up of grass.

TAIGA

  • Rainfall- 20 to 40 inches per year
  • Temperature- 32 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Location- North America, Asia, and Europe
  • Animals- Owls, Moose, and Deer
  • Plants- Pine trees, White Spruce, Hemlock, and Douglas Fir
  • Interesting facts- The taiga biome is the covers most of the Earth's land

TUNDRA

  • Rainfall- 6 to 10 inches a year
  • Temperature- 3 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Location- Alaska, Northern Canada, parts of Greenland, Northern Scandinavia, Northern Siberia, and Russia
  • Animals- Polar bear, Arctic fox, Snowy owl, and Arctic hare
  • Plants- Bearberry, Arctic moss, Caribou Moss, and Diamond Leaf Willow
  • Interesting fact- The Tundra biome is by far the coldest of all biomes on the Blue Planet.

DESERT

  • Rainfall- less than 10 inches a year
  • Temperature- 20 to 25 degrees
  • Location- Africa, Australia, South America, and North America
  • Animals- Scorpions, Lizards, Snakes, and Lynx
  • Plants- Prickly pear cacti and wild flower
  • Interesting facts- The desert biome is one of the hardest biomes to live in.

TEMPERATE GRASSLAND

  • Rainfall- 20 to 35 inches per year
  • Temperature- 100 to -40 degrees
  • Location- Africa, South America, and North America
  • Animals- Bison, Prairie dogs, Wolves, Coyotes, and Swift foxes
  • Plants- Grasses, Trees, and Large Shrubs
  • Interesting facts- the lowest protection f any biome is the temperate grassland

TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST

  • Rainfall- 30 to 60 inches a year
  • Temperature- 50 degrees
  • Location- North America, Europe, and Asia
  • Animals- Raccoons, Cardinals, and red foxes
  • Plants- lilies, lichens, moss, and ferns
  • Interesting facts- this biome is characterized by its leaf-shedding trees and its seasons

TEMPERATE EVERGREEN FOREST

  • Rainfall- 200cm a year
  • Temperature- 15 to 30 degrees Celsius
  • Location- North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia
  • Animals- Moose, Reindeer, Caribou, and Elk
  • Plants- Trees, Conifers, and Shrubs
  • Interesting facts- This biome is under the threat of logging and mining.
