ELECTRO GEL PHORESIS AND DNA FINGER PRINTING

ELECTRO GEL PHORESIS

  • Gel electrophoresis separates an individual's DNA fragments
  • from one another according to size.
  • It analyzes macromolecules and their fragments
  • It is used to create a "DNA Fingerprint"

Untitled Slide

  • Take different DNA samples and expose them to the
  • same restriction enzyme to cut the DNA into fragments
  • This creates Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms
  • These are fragments of DNA having different lengths

Untitled Slide

  • Then take the DNA RFLP's and load them into the agar gel
  • Turn on electricity
  • The RFLP's will separate according to length/size of fragments
  • Stain the gel to see the fragments
  • The DNA bands create a unique fingerprint of the DNA

DNA FINGERPRINTING

  • DNA fingerprinting is a way of identifying a specific individual,
  • rather than simply identifying a species or some particular trait
  • It is identifying a persons traits by means of DNA
