WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER?
A brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood,
energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks
Often develops in a person's adult years; median age is 25
Not easy to spot when it starts; the symptoms may seem like
separate problems, not recognized as parts of a larger problem

Extreme changes in energy, sleep, activity, and mood
Experience unusual intense emotional states called
"mood episodes"
The two mood episodes are:
Manic (at your highest) and depressive (at your lowest)

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
Having blood relatives (parents, siblings, etc.) with bipolar disorder
Periods of high stress
Drug or alcohol abuse
Major life changes, such as the death of a loved one
Being in your early 20s

CHANCES OF BEING BIPOLAR

TREATMENT
To date, there is no cure for bipolar disorder.
Because bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness, people with the disorder
need long-term treatment to maintain control of bipolar symptoms.
An effective maintenance treatment plan includes medication and
psychotherapy for preventing relapse and reducing symptom severity.
