WHAT IS BIPOLAR?

  • Bipolar disorder is a condition of the brain that causes random mood swings and loss in energy or large increase in energy. These symptoms are much more intense than than what normal people experience.
  • Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depressive illness. This is because it causes mood swings so that behavior changes from manic to depressive instantly.

DEPRESSION

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Loss of interest in social activities
  • Feelings of guilt
  • Low energy
  • Anger

MANIA

  • Racing thoughts
  • Inflated ego
  • Overspending
  • Impulsiveness
  • Increased sexual drive

THE CAUSE OF BIPOLAR

  • Unknown
  • Most likely genetic
  • Living with family members that have bipolar disorder

TREATMENT

  • Contact doctors
  • Therapy

FACTS

  • Over 10 million Americans have bipolar disorder
  • Children can get it but the symptoms are different than the adults
  • Usual age is late teens to early twenties
  • Bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as depression in women and schizophrenia in men
