CHORDATA

  • Chordata has to do with organisms that have a backbone.
  • These creatures will include, reptiles, mammals, fish, and, you guessed it, birds.

INTRO TO BIRDS

  • Birds are feathered creatures that have many variations
  • This includes random colors, or the fact that they can be herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, or detrivores

RESPONSE

  • Nutcracker birds can store 2000 seeds (WOW 2000?!) for the winter and "they nearly never make a mistake when it comes to remembering stored seeds." (Explorebiodiversity.com)
  • They know when changes in weather occur when they fly south or north for different seasons

REPRODUCTION

  • Birds have sexual reproduction
  • "Female Birds have a cloaca, or a single entrance and exit for sperm, eggs, and waste" (ck12.org)
  • Eggs are laid by the female and cared for.

MOVEMENT

  • Birds use their wings for the most part
  • Legs are primarily used for grabbing food or landing.

HOMEOSTASIS

  • "Birds have a higher metabolism, and thus, higher body temperature, than humans" (birding.about.com)
  • Birds must move south during the winter in order to stay warm

FAST FACTS

  • There are over 10,000 known species of birds
  • Some "house birds" enjoy listening to music, such as classical, rock, and other types, but rarely pop or rap
  • Bird eggs can range from many different colors and patterns, like speckled blue
