HIGHLIGHTS OF POPE PETER

  • What is a pope:The bishop of the Rome and the leader of the worldwide catholic church.
  • the first also known as Simon pet was a leader of one of the early christen leader.
  • He was one of the twelve apostles,was at Jesus’ side at the Transfiguration,He helped organize the Last Supper
  • He is venerated as a Saint
  • Peter was always listed as the first of the Apostles in all of the New Testament accounts and was a member of the inner circle of Jesus

HIGHLIGHTS OF POPE FRANCIS

  • Holy Week, he washed the feet of AIDS patients and the incarcerated,
  • From buenos aires and as a teenager had his lung removed
  • Completed spiritually as a Jesuit
  • Papacy began march 13 2013

ROLE OF THE ARCHDIOCESE

  • Overseeing all the bishops in the arch. Of Philadelphia
  • selection of clergy/priests to individual churches,ordination of priests clergy who have completed seminary
  • During religious holidays, the archbishop is the one who begins the sacrament of confirmation
  • The archbishop will also delegate other bishops to perform this duty.

  • discipline of the clergy, deacons, priests & bishops under his jurisdiction.
  • This duty requires the archb. to either remove or reassign priests from their duties and responsibilities.
  • The responsibility of ensuring this doctrine is being taught and followed in each church

THE ROLE OF THE BISHOP TODAY

  • they are responsible to keep their communality rules and regulations in order.
  • Bishops are also responsible for preaching the Gospel
  • Administering the sacraments and guiding people to Christ
  • Basically the bishop plays the "principal" and "teacher" in the faith community.

VICAR OF CHRIST

  • bishop is the vicar of Christ because it means that he is Christ's visible representative on earth
  • Christ is the King and Head of the Church however he is in heaven.
  • So Peter's successor (the Pope) is like the "prime minister" on earth.
