BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The purpose of Black History Month is to celebrate the achievements by black Americans. It is a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.

The two gentlemen that began Black History Month in 1915 were Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland.

The name was the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. ( ASNLH)

The name now is the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. (ASALH)

The group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926.

Black History Month was officially recognized by President Gerald R. Ford. President Gerald R. Ford recognized it in 1976.
