BLACK HOLES

BY: JUSTIN ARMENTA, DANIEL MARTINEZ, JACK BARDSLEY, & TAKEVIA BOLTON

WHAT ARE BLACK HOLES?

  • A black hole is a point in space that is infinitely small
  • Because it is infinitely small it is also infinitely dense
  • The large amount of mass within it causes a strong gravitational pull
  • Black holes are thought to be the center of most galaxies

WHY BLACK HOLES ARE BLACK

  • Black holes has such a strong gravitational pull that light can't escape
  • The gravity around them causes time to be altered as well as matter
  • If an object is near a black hole it will spiral towards it
  • After it reaches the center it joins the infinitely small mass in the middle

HISTORY OF THE BLACK HOLE

  • John Mitchell suggested the modern theory of black holes
  • He wrote it in a letter in 1783
  • It wasn't until 1915 that black holes were proven with real evidence
  • John Wheeler coined the phrase "black hole" in 1967
