Black Lung Disease

What is it?

  • This is an infection of the lungs.
  • It's also know as "Pneumoconiosis.
  • This is a preventable disease.

What causes it?

Black lung is caused by inhaling large amounts of coal dust.

How to prevent

  • If skin comes in contact with coal dust, wash affectively using soap and water.
  • If coal dust has contacted your clothing, immediately remove them.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands, forearms, and face before doing anything involving personal hygiene.

Symptoms of Black Lung

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain

Treatment

  • There is no known treatment for the infection.
  • Victims should avoid further exposure to coal dust.

Possible Bodily Effects

  • Affects the respiratory system
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Failure of right side of heart
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Respiratory failure

Death Toll

Approximately 10,000 miners have died over the past decade due to Black Lung.
