GLOSSY PURPLE CLOT

  • This creates a vivid image in your head
  • It uses colour as a powerful technique
  • Although this seems happy at first there is a horror theme as well
  • A clot signifies an evil thing which causes horrible illness
  • This is a powerful technique because there are two sides to this line

THE TINKLING BOTTOM

  • This is onomatopoeia and is very important to this poem
  • It creates a vivid imageof the jar filling up with beautiful fruit
  • It uses sound effects as a way of describing what happened
  • Tinkling suggests the way that the drops of the fell on to the jar
  • This shows that he enjoyed it so much that he can remember the sounds of the day

DARK BLOBS BURNED

  • The word burned suggests how they explode out of the fruit
  • Blobs describe perfectly the form of one of these beautiful fruits
  • But there is also a bad side to this line
  • Burning can suggest that it will stop soon, that the fire will run out
  • This links to the moral because it suggests that they won't last long

A PLATE OF EYES

  • This is a powerful and striking quote
  • This is an horrific image that is placed in your mind
  • It gives you the sense of a horror film
  • The complete opposite to what the poem is depicting
  • This makes the poem vivid by forcing you to imagine this gruesome thing

PALMS STICKY AS BLUEBEARD'S

  • This carries on the horror theme using touch as a technique
  • This suggests hands covered in berry juice
  • The juice is like blood stains on Heaney's palms
  • Blood, like that on Blue Beard's hands when he killed his wives
  • This is powerful because it creates a vivid image in your head

A RAT-GREY FUNGUS

  • This is another example of colour being used as a technique
  • Not only does ot use colour but it also uses touch and metaphors
  • You can imagine the slimy fur of a rat keeping you from the fruit
  • It turns a beautiful juicy fruit into a dirty and stinking rodent
  • This is very emotive as it begins to tell the moral of the poem

THE JUICE WAS STINKING TOO

  • This uses senses as a powerful technique
  • It uses smell to make it vivid as you begin to understand the poem
  • He uses the word stinking to portray his sadness

  • This is very important when youcome to think of the poem's moral

FELT LIKE CRYING. IT WASN'T FAIR

  • This really brings home the feelings he had
  • It makes you undertsand what it meant to him
  • It uses the word crying to portray the emotion in the poem
  • This suggest that he is learning about life and its hard realities
  • This brings you to the moral, goodthings don't last forever

THE MESSAGE

  • There is a constant change in emotion in tis poem
  • At the beginning Heaney is on top of the world
  • But towards the end the mood suddenly swings
  • This poem is about a child beginning to realise how the world works
  • The message is that the better things get, the worse they will end
