PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ISAAC NEWTON

THE SCIENTIST, THE INVENTOR,THE RENAISSANCE MAN

WHERE?

  • The scientist was born in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England on Christmas Day, 1642
  • He also grew up and invented and discovered many things there
  • Newton went to Trinity College, Cambridge University
  • Newton is one of the most famous scientists of all time

MAJOR AcHIEVEMENTS

  • Isaac Newton was a brilliant scientist, as well as an inventor
  • He dicovered the law of gravity, as well as the three laws of motion
  • Invented calculus, which we still use today
  • Invented reflecting telescopes that we use to discover new things
  • Isaac also advanced early modern chemistry

NEWTON'S BELIEFS

  • He believed in the divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit
  • Jesus was the Messiah and atoned for our sins by dying on the cross
  • He never believed in the externality on the cross
  • Believed the father and the son are one, but weren't one in the sense that they were consubstantial (of the same substance)

QUOTES

  • "Men build too many walls and not enough bridges"
  • "No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess"
  • "What goes up must come down"
  • These quotes are what drove Newton to his great discoveries and inventions

WHAT MAKES HIM A HUMANIST?

  • Like other men of his time, Newton was a humanist
  • This is because his discoveries and inventions weren't driven by religion. They were his own thoughts.
  • For example, he didn't invent calculus or discover gravity because of his beliefs of Jesus Christ

HOW DID HE AFFECT THE MODERN WORLD?

  • Newton's discovery of gravity gave people the knowledge to invent new things and make discoveries
  • For example, we may not have had the knowledge to go to outer space if we didn't know about the laws of gravity
  • His invention of the reflecting telescope is used to discover new things in and about space, even to this day
  • Without Newton's discoveries and inventions, we wouldn't be where we are today with technology and knowledge
