The scientific name for the bloodroot is Sanguinaria candensis

The bloodroot grows in and at the edge of moist woods in southeast Manitoba through to Nova Scotia

APEARANCE

  • The bloodroot resembles a water lilly
  • It also has 8 to 16 petals
  • Gold yellow centre
  • Large round leaves with deep lobes

The bloodroot gets its name from the red juice its roots contain

Although the roots are extremely poisonous the Native Americans used it for medicine and it Is also used as dyes and insect repellant
