  • Born February 6, 1945 & Died May 11,1981
  • Born to Capt. Norval Marley and Cedella Booker
  • Married Rita Marley
  • Has at least twelve children
  • Described as worlds most famous Rastafarian 

early life

  •  Born in Rhoden Hall, Nine Miles, St. Ann, Jamaica
  •  Was raised by his mom and her family
  • Moved to Trench Town, Kingston at the age of 12
  •  Soon he quitted school and started to work as a welder
  •  1962 he injured his eye while welding, quits and focused totally on music

start of career

  •  Bob Marley & The Wailers first broke through in 1963 in Jamaica
  •  Their single "Simmer down" hit the Jamaican charts for 2 months
  • Because of bad contract with record label, they didn't earn properly
  • He moved to USA to earn money, dreaming of his own record label
  • After few years he returned and set up his label, but it was short-aged

WAITING FOR a BREAKTHROUGH

  •  Marley got interested in Rastafarianism, growing dreadlocks at that time
  •  Wailers trio was hired as song makers with a weekly salary
  •  For a few years they threw gigs and wrote songs, without huge success
  •  1971 "Trench Town Rock" reached 1st place on singles chart
  •  It made Wailers very popular, but only in Jamaica

INTERNATIONAL POPULARITY

  •  For a few years they recorded albums, and gained name in G.B. and Jamaica
  •  1974 Eric Clapton recorded "I Shot the Sheriff", a song made by Marley
  •  Soon everyone knew Marley's name, and Wailers started to throw gigs again
  •  In 1976 Marley was already considered as spokesman of Reggae and living legend
  •  In 1977 Marley recorded lots of to-be-hits in London

LATE PARTS OF CAREER

  •  In 1978 Marley started his first world tour, called Kaya 78
  •  He went to Ethiopia in 1978, which purified his African identity
  • After that trip Marley started to act violent and absent and he was depressed
  •  He was often too tired to give interviews, but his gigs could last for over 3hrs
  •  In 1980 he released his last album and started his biggest world tour

  • Marley's condition was getting worse day by day
  • In the early 1970s, he got a wound under his toe nail, which opened again and again
  •  Under constant stress the wound transformed into melanoma
  •  Marley didn't accept amputation, which was required to stop the cancer
  • He tried all kinds of curing methods, from chemotherapy to holistic methods

death

  • Marley died at a hospital in Miami, when he was returning to Jamaica from Germany
  • Marley got a state funeral in Jamaica on May 21,1981
  •  He was buried with his guitar, marijuana bud, football, ring and bible
  • He was buried in Nine Miles, St. Ann where he was born

legacy

  •  Marley was the one that combined Rastafarianism and Reggae music.
  • He spread the word of Rastafarianism and people see him as a religious leader
  •  His cultural value is huge, his songs are very common cover songs
  •  In Africa he is held as hero of oppressed and fighter of freedom
  •  His face is a huge product, combined with Ethiopian flag colors

  • In 1984, Legend, Bob Marley’s greatest hits album was released
  • In 1990, February 6th, Bob’s birthday, was recognized by the Jamaican government
  • In 1994, Bob Marley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • In 1999, Time Magazine chose Marley’s ‘Exodus’ as album of the century
  • In 2000-2001, One Love was named song of the millennium & Bob gets a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame
