INfradian Rhythms

Infradian Rhythms

•Cycles that last less than 24 hours long. For example, the cycle of sleep and the stages that occur through the night

Ali

  • From this experience Ali will find out what her sleep pattern is like and she will also see how long her different stages of sleep are.
Ali has volunteered to take part in a sleep study. She will be spending the night in a sleep lab during which an EEG will measure electrical activity in her brain. What will Ali learn from this experience?

BRAC

  • BRAC is what Klietman referred to as the 90 minute cycle during sleep.
  • However, klietman suggested that this process happens during the day where people move from being alert to being fatigued. This period is thought to be 90 minutes.
  • The school timetable has two lessons then break which allows students to move from being fatigued to alert again. This process then repeats as another two lessons are followed by lunch.
  • However, an area of concern would be during the afternoon where 3 lessons take place with no rest periods. By lesson 3 students will be very fatigued and will not be able to concentrate during that period

Narcolepsy

  • Narcolepsy is a condition characterised by a extreme tendency to fall asleep whenever in relaxing environments.
  • It is though to be caused by a deficiency in the production of the chemical hypocretin in the brain.
  • It is relevant because if during the day you have to work for to long time without a break, it could enhance the chances of getting narcolepsy (falling asleep).

Weekly Rhythms

  • This is the grouping of 7 days into a unit called a week
  • This is the idea that humans perform different behaviours at different points in the week
  • E.g. blood pressure and heart rate is higher during the working week

monthly rhythms

  • An example of this is a women's menstrual cycle which last about a month
  • This cycle is regulated by hormones

Annual rhythms

  • These rhythms are related to seasons
  • For example people become depressed during the winter months, this is called seasonal affective disorder.
  • Surprisingly this disorder has been found to be worse amoung women
