TYPES OF FRACTURES

  • Compound
  • Simple
  • Spiral
  • Compression
  • Oblique

(CONT.)

  • Comminuted
  • Depressed
  • Impacted
  • Greenstick

COMPOUND

  • A fracture in which broken bone fragments lacerate soft tissue
  • Protrudes through an open wound of the skin
  • Immediate surgery is needed

SIMPLE

  • A broken bone where the bone does not pierce the skin

SPIRAL

  • Caused by a twisting motion or force
  • Also called a torsion fracture

COMPRESSION

  • A fracture in which the bone collapses
  • Common in elderly people
  • Treatments can include pain medication and immobilization

OBLIQUE

  • A fracture that goes at a angle to the axis

COMMINUTED

  • A fracture made of relatively small fragments

DEPRESSED

  • Where the bone is pushed in

IMPACTED

  • One broken end
  • It is wedged into another broken end

GREENSTICK

  • One side is broken
  • The other side only bent
  • Common in children
