  • Bones begin as hyaline cartilage.
  • As children grow the cartilage is slowly replaced by bone.
  • On average bones grow completely in 18 to 25 years.

  • Bones change shape as they grow.

  • The medullary cavity forms in the womb.
  • Red blood cells are formed in the cavity.
  • As people get older the cavity stores fat.
  • This fat is called marrow.

THE GROWTH STOPS HERE

  • Growth happens mainly in the epiphyseal plate.
  • This is also known as the growth plate.
  • The epiphyseal plate is made up of articulate cartilage.
  • Pressure from other bones forces the plate to
