what is bone loss?

  • Is the loss of marrow and minerals
  • Bones become brittle/weak
  • Space and Earth
  • Leads to amputation
-called osteoporosis
-bones become breakable
-can happen to old people on earth or cancerous people
-often people with osteoporosis
-astronauts who go to space long-term are affected more
- people with osteoporosis are often amputated

why does It happen in space?

  • Less gravity leads to bone loss
  • They lose 1% of their BMD per month on the ISS
  • Being weightless causes it
  • The bones don't work against any force
Since there's no gravity to fight against, bone loss occurs in space. People lose their bone mineral density (BMD which are the minerals in bone). On average people lose 1% of their BMD on the International Space Station monthly. In retrospect, an average elderly person with osteoporosis would lose 2-4% yearly.

Bone and recovery Stats

  • Leg, hip, and spine bones are the most affected
  • This is because the bare alot of weight
  • Inner bones do not recover as well
  • Certain machines help the recovery
- outer is better
-6 months
- certain bones wont heal at all
- using treadmills, stair climbers, and the ski machine are machines that can prevent bone loss
-the ski machine is a machine that allows you to "ski" and help other BONES heal

prevention

  • Mineral-rich diet
  • Exercise
  • Vitamin supplementation
  • Reduce Stress
Some ways to help prevent or reduce bone loss are to start a mineral rich diet. The diet will add minerals including calcium and phosphorus to your bones making them get some density back. Exercise is very important so that you can move your bones and don't have to worry too much about bone loss. Another good ways is Vitamin Supplementation. It serves the same purpose as the mineral rich diet. Some good minerals are calcium, vitamin D, magnesium. Also try to reduce your stress levels because it works hard on your bones.
