BONUS ARMY

HOW DID IT START

• After world war one veterans wanted an add bonus
• Draftees where put into groups during war
• One group headed development and made 10x as much as the rest
• most veterans wanted money for their service

WHAT HAPPENED

• The govt. agreed after long protests
• They would be paid in govt. bonds
• Only family would be paid after death
• Then the economy crashed

DURING DEPRESSION

• Veterans demanded money now
• Started riding empty trains or cars
• Wanted to get to DC
• Police tried to stop them
• They where escorted to Indiana and made camp there

WHAT NEXT?

• Made towns
• Lived in Hoovervilles
• Went to capital to protest

PROTESTS

• People gathered at capital
• Veterans sang America
• Then they left
• The next day some veterans went home
• 20,000 stayed

ROIT PROTEST

• 20,000 said they would never leave
• Army was sent to evict them
• Three policemen shot
• One veteran dead
• Someone thought it was a parade

WHAT HAPPENES NOW

• People stopped protests
• Made new deal
• Said soliders would be paid more
