Laying the Groundwork

Engagement vs. Empowerment (Bill Ferriter)

  • Engaging students means getting kids excited about OUR content, interests, curricula
  • Empowering students means giving kids the knowledge and skills to pursue their passions, interests, future
  • According to Couros, if you focus on empowerment, kids will be engaged

Building Empowerment Culture

  • our job as educators is not to control others but bring out the best in them
  • try new things: like Identity Day where everyone in your building shares one thing they are passionate about
  • focus on learning rather than school
  • keep in mind: empowerment is more than a single event
  • creat a shared vision
