PRESENTATION OUTLINE
BOOK FOUR CLOSE READING EXERCISE
PASSAGE ONE SUMMARY
- The Gods are looking at Troy and deciding what to do.
- Zeus says Menelaus has two goddesses on his side and Aphrodite is helping Paris, but menelaus isn't winning.
- The Gods want to end the war but don't know whether to do it by making both sides friends or more war.
- Athena and Hera are planning to destroy Troy and don't agree with Zeus because they worked hard.
- Zeus is angry, doesn't want to fight with Hera, and lets her destroy Troy.
WHAT ARE WE REMINDED OF ABOUT THE GODS?
We are reminded that the Gods manipulate everything and that they don't agree on many things. Hera tells Zeus, "But all we other gods do not approve of what you're doing." Hera is telling Zeus that they don't approve of him saving Troy. This shows that the Gods let themselves do whatever they want but they don't always agree.
WHY SHOULD THE TROJANS AND GREEKS FIGHT IF THE GODS CONTROL FATE?
I feel like the Trojans and Greeks shouldn't fight because they can't control what happens so their fighting is pointless. But I feel like they fight for the Gods because they know that is what they want. It is worth putting in effort because if they are fighting good, then the Gods could help them win through divine intervention. Also they could lose a lot of people and their city could be destroyed if they displease the Gods.
PASSAGE TWO SUMMARY
- The Gods agree in making the Greeks and Trojans fight.
- Athena goes up to Pandarus and manipulates him to shoot an arrow at Menelaus to start up the fight again.
- Pandarus shoots the arrow and Athena makes it so the arrow hit the buckle of Menelaus.
- Menelaus is now wounded and Agamemnon gets mad at the Trojans for breaking their oath.
QUESTIONS!
- Who convinces Pandarus to shoot Menelaus?
- Why did Athena want Menelaus to get shot?
- How can Agamemnon's trust in the Gods be reflected today?
- Where did the arrow hit Menelaus?
PASSAGE THREE SUMMARY
Apollo is angry at the Trojans because they aren't fighting as well as the Greeks. In the fight, Diores was killed by Peirous when he hit his shin with a rock. As Peirous is getting up, Thoas stabs him in the lung. When Thoas was trying to get Peirous' armor, Peirous' friends killed him. It was a blood bath and Greeks and Trojans laid dead together.
QUESTIONS??
- Who dies?
- Why is Apollo mad in the beginning?
- Why is it important that Greeks and Trojans lay dead together?
- How are most people dying?
