MY PRESENTATION

BY CLARICE RODRIGUEZ

My first book I read was The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had.

Kristin Levine

So this book is about the friendship between a white boy and black girl. So in the beginning Dit (Henry Otis Sims) is at first happy that the new post man is coming with a child. He really wants someone to play with because he is one of the children of nine of his family. When he finds out the child is a girl, he gets mad. The black girl's name is Emma. In the book, Dit doesn't care that Emma is black. So during the book, Dit's friends' makes fun of him for being friend's with Emma becuase she is black and they say that is his girlfriend. Later on, one of the friends die from the flu. Now let's get to the intense part. Doc is a black barber, who is the little brother of the white sheriff, Big Foot. You see, Big Foot's daddy went into the woods with Doc's mom and nine months later Doc was born. Big Foot is ashamed of having a black brother. Throughout the book, D…

MAIN CHARACTERS

  • Dit- 13 year old boy, child of nine, who is upset the new postman's child isn't a boy. His dad often forgets his name. He is very adventurous and loves exploring.
  • Emma- the black girl of the story. She is described beautiful in the book by Dit and is very smart. She is very proper and fancy and doesn't like exploring or getting dirty
  • Dr. Griffith- the doctor of the story and helps get Doc out of town. Also helps people with the flu.
  • Doc- A black barber and is the little brother of Big Foot. He is beaten up in this book and fears Big Foot and lets him steal stuff in the barber shop.
  • Big Foot- the sheriff of the town and hates black people. Especially Doc. He bullies and steals from the shop( for a bunch of years). He drinks a lot and screams. Very mean and rude in the book.

My favorite part of the book was when Dit and Emma kissed at the end before she left. That was the best part according to my opinion. I love romantic books and thought it was sweet what happend at the end. Also, I like the part when Dit became friends with Emma because he doesn't care about the pigment of Emma's skin. That is true friendship right there. That made a difference, specially back then when black people were mistreated, Dit stood out and became friends with a black girl.

I chose this book because I never really read about times when Black and white people mistreated each other or fought. I wanted to try something new and it was a really good choice. These are one of the best books I have ever read. It has great twist, turns, cliffhangers, drama, romance and adventure.

I recommend this book for those who love romance, adventure, drama and etc. This book was very interesting and deep. I really love reading this book, I would even read it twice.

I didn't have any questions for this book. I was confused on how Doc shot Big Foot, but I read it again and understood where the wound was and how fatal it was. Besides that, I had no questions at all. I perfectly understood this amazing book.

I also read Rain Reign.

Ann M. Martin

Rose Howard is a girl who has high-functioning autism and she loves homonyms. Notice that the cover of this book is named Rain Reign. She has a dog name Rain and her Uncle Weldon and Dad(Wesley). She has a homonym list and adds new words everyday. She also will scream if someone breaks a rule in class. So the teachers give her dad a weekly progress report about her behavior. During the book, her dad will work during the day and drink all night at a bar. She makes dinner for her and dad. Her uncle drops her off at school. One night, her dad saw Rain in an alley and brought her home and that's how they got Rain. There's a storm in the middle of the story and the Dad let's Rain out during the storm(Hurricane Susan). Rose gets mad. She breaks every rule kinda to find her dog. When they finally find Rain, they figure out she was microchipped and her old family w…

MAIN CHARACTERS

  • Rose Howard- girl who follows the rules a lot. Amd she is autistic and loves her uncle, dad, and rain.
  • Wesley Howard- Rose's dad. He cusses a lot during the story and looses his job. He drinks at Luck at the Irish every night leaving Rose alone and he leaves Rose with her uncle at the end of the book.
  • Weldon Howard- Rose's uncle who has a comstructing job. He loves Rose a lot and is very patient with her. Can treat her a lot with treats.
  • Mrs. Leibler- Rose's teacher who helps her with her special needs.
  • Mrs. Kushel- Rose's other teacher who helps her with her special needs.
  • Rain- Rose's dog who loves Rose very much and is adventurous. Rain has a good nose too.

My favorite part was when Rose was letting Rain(Olivia) go to her other family. She was being selfless and brave. Even though Rain was her best friend.

I chose this book because Mrs. Keele said it was an amazing story. It is really a good book too.

I recommend this book to those who like sad stories because it was kinda sad because her Dad left at the end. Rose was also convinced by her Dad that her mom ran away because of her, but the mom actually died of a heart anyuerism. But some parts of the book were happy and fun.

My questition about this book is if the dad was going to come back for Rose or if she was gonna get a new dog. The only comment I had is that Rose's dad wasn't really patient with her, even though she had autism. Only her teachers, friends and uncle showed her patience.

BONUS!!!

Sisters

Raina Telgemier

This is about Raina and her sister Amara. It's an autobiography. It tells about how her family road trip from California to Colorado. So teen Raina is in a car where her sister Amara's pet snake Mango is. Raina never sits in the front seat. During the book, the girls flashback from memory to memory on how Raina wanted a little sister when she was young. Her wish came true and then she had a brother years later. In the book, Raina and Amara fight a lot and Amara seems to be very angry and emotional. When they reach Colorado, Raina tries to fit in with her cousins who are like wearing make up and so and so. The parents and in-laws fight a lot too. Amara and Raina are worried because they don't want their parents to have a divorce because they wanted to spend a lot of alone time together. At the end, they are getting home and Amara and Raina make up …

MAIN CHARACTERS

  • Raina Telgemier- teenage girl who has braces and is very sarcastic. She loves to draw and listen to music.
  • Amara Telgemier- middle child who is tomboyish and is angry and emotional throughout this book.
  • Will Telgemier- youngest of the family and very energetic throughout the book and loves dinosaurs and cars. He is very adventurous.
  • Mom- wears glasses and can be independent sometimes. Very energetic too and loves the outdoors and being adventurous with family.
  • Dad- very annoying, but decribed as a good dad. He can't stand still for a while and loves moving around a lot.

My favorite part of the book was when Amara caught the Mango again and Raina was freaking out. It was funny when she was suprised Mango wasn't dead and she didn't know what to do.

I chose this book becaus it reminds me of my relationship with me and my little sister Sara-Lynn.

I recommend this book to those who like reading graphic novels. This book did a great job interpreting her story through pictures.

I had no questions about this book. My only comment is that is was a really funny and sweet book about a relationship between sisters.
