FACTS ABOUT HIM

  • Born April 5, 1856
  • First African American to be on a US postage stamp
  • He was born as a slave but his father was a white plantation owner

growing up

  • His mother and father worked on a plantation in Virginia
  • Had a brother and sister
  • Started working for his master at 5 years of age
  • 1965 he and his family were set free

school life

  • Booker T Washington went to a local school for all black children
  • In 1872 he went to Hampton Institute which was a college for black student
  • The college was 500 miles away from home
  • He had to convince them to let him enroll into the school
  • He finally graduated from there

Here at tuskegee they taught them things that they could make a living off of like, farming, agriculture, construction and sewing.

later life

  • Booker was married three times
  • Fannie N. Smith (first wife)
  • Olivia A. Davidson (second wife)
  • Margret James (third wife)
  • He had 3 children in total

1895 through 1915 Booker T Washington was the most famous black man in America.

In September 1895 Booker was invited to speak at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta. This day he became a national hero.

Booker's Death

  • Died November 15,1915
  • In New york city he collapsed, then he was brought back to Tuckege
  • He was buried on Tuskegee campus near the University Chapel
