BOSTON TEA PARTY

An event that changed American History

BOSTON TEA PARTY

  • It was an act of rebellion against Parliament
  • It was led by the Sons of Liberty
  • Occurred on December 16, 1773

SONS OF LIBERTY

  • These were patriots who desired freedom from England
  • They dressed as natives
  • They boarded 3 british ships
  • Tossed tea into Boston harbor

WHY IT HAPPENED

  • Colonists grew tired of Great Britain's constant taxing
  • Tea was part of the culture that colonists brought to America
  • The tax on tea was outrageous and unjust in the colonist's eyes
  • "No taxation without representation"

THE RESULT

  • British officials were outraged
  • This was the first destructive act of rebellion
  • As a response the Coercive acts were instituted

THE COERCIVE ACTS

  • Boston Port Act
  • Massachusetts Government Act
  • Administration of Justice Act
  • Quartering Act

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE FUTURE

  • Colonists were even angrier after the coercive acts
  • It gave them fervor to fight back
  • It led to the formation of the first Continental Congress
  • It was a contributing factor to the American Revolution
  • The Boston tea party is important to all of America
