PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BOXER

BY: MARIEL COLAO

"I do not understand it. I would not have believed that such things could happen on our farm. It must be due to some fault in ourselves. The solution, as I see it, is to work harder. From now onwards I shall get up a full hour earlier in the mornings. "
-Boxer

QUOTE ANALYSIS

  • The quote on the previous page demonstrates Boxer's ignorance of fault and corruption in the government. It also shows his loyalty to the government as well as his work ethic.

WEBSITE QUOTE

  • "He (Boxer) works harder than all the other animals, and he's instrumental in the battles they fight against the humans. Unfortunately, he's not very smart. When things don't make sense to him, the only slogans he can fall back on are, 'I will work harder,' and 'Napoleon is always right.' He represents the uneducated working class of Communist Russia, whose labor and loyalty the party could not survive without. In the end, when Boxer becomes too old and weak to be useful any more, he's sent to the slaughterhouse, the same fate he would have met under human authority."

CONNECTION TO THEME

  • One of the themes of Animal Farm is the dangers of a naive working class. Boxer is an almost perfect example of this theme. Boxer follows Napoleon's orders without question and works for a cause he doesn't fully understand.
