PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BRAIN ANATOMY

HUMAN VS. CHIMPANZEE

  • A chimpanzee's brain is about 1/3 the size of a human's
  • Human brains are about 1,352 grams
  • Chimp brains are about 384 grams
  • They share many cognitive and emotional processes

POWERING THE BRAIN

  • The body consumes about 100 watts of energy; the brain uses 20% or 20 watts
  • Smarter people use more energy by having more glial cells (cells that nourish and assist neutrons)

UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGES

  • Animals don't understand our language, just the tone we use
  • Animals aren't able to speak, and therefore have no language for us to understand

WHAT IS IT MADE OF AND PHYSICAL FEATURES

  • About 75% water
  • Fattiest organ, consisting of a minimum of 60% fat
  • Weighs about 3 pounds

THE DIFFERENT PARTS

  • Made up of 4 main parts: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, Brain Stem, and Diencephalon
  • Cerebrum makes up two-thirds of our brain and is the biggest part

HOW MUCH IS USED?

  • Contrary to popular belief, much more than 10% of our brain is used
  • MRI and PET scans show that even during sleep more than 10% is used
  • Some studies even show that 100% of our brain is used in a day
