PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM

BY: LAUREN, KAYLEE, LAWREN

The Brain
•Control center of the body.
•Involved with almost all the body's activities.

Cerebrum
•Largest part of the brain
•Carries out thought processes involved with learning, memory, language, speech, voluntary body movements, and sensory perception.

Cerebellum
•Located at the back of the brain.
•Controls balance, posture, and coordination.

Brain Stem
•Connects the brain to the spinal cord.
•Made up of two regions
-medulla oblongata
-pons

Hypothalamus
•Located between the cerebrum and brain stem
•Regulates body temperature, thirst, appetite, water balance.

Central Nervous System
•Made up of the brain and the spinal cord.
•Consists of mostly interneurons
•coordinates all the body's activities

Peripheral Nervous System
•Consists of sensory neurons and motor neurons that carry info to and from the CNS
•Classified further as being either the somatic or autonomic nervous system

Untitled Slide

Somatic Nervous System
•Nerves relays info from external sensory receptors to the CNS
•Motor nerves relay info from the CNS to skeletal muscle
•Usually voluntary

Autonomic Nervous System
•Carries impulses from CNS to the heart and other internal organs
•Involuntary
•Divided into two branches:
-Sympathetic nervous system
*Fight or flight
-Parasympathetic nervous system
*Rest and digest
