Executive Branch

  • President and Vice President make up Executive Branch
  • President acts as the commander of chief of armed forces
  • President responsible for executing and implementing laws
  • The Cabinet is responsible for day to day activities
  • Vice President assumes presidency if president cannot perform

The Cabinet

  • Made up of 15 executive departments
  • Appointed by the President and confirmed by Senate
  • Members are the Presidents closest confidents
  • All members take the title of Secretary

Legislative Branch

  • Consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives
  • Responsible for making laws 
  • House has power to initiate revenue bills and impeachment
  • Senate has power to ratify treaties 
  • To pass laws Senate and House must pass bill by majority vote

Judicial Branch

  • Responsible for interpreting the laws and applying it to the states
  • 1 Chief Justice, 8 Associate Judges; serve for life
  • Congress determines the jurisdiction of federal courts
  • Congress has power to establish inferior courts
  • The Supreme Court is the highest in the United States

Supreme Court

  • Highest Court in the United States
  • Only court established by the Constitution
  • Job is to interpret the meaning of the law
  • All courts must follow the decisions made by Supreme Ct.
  • Can decide if an act by the President is constitutional

Judicial Process

  • Person reports crime and investigation occurs
  • Grand Jury or preliminary hearing 
  • Formal charge against the person--formal hearing 
  • Jury trial or plea by defendant  
  • Sentencing hearing and appeals if filed
