  • 1956- Kubitscheck becomes president & helps Brazil achieve major economic growth
  • 1960- Kubitscheck moves capital to Brasilia
  • 1960- Quadros becomes pres. Then resigns putting country into economic crisis
  • (Quadros succeeded by Goulart)
  • 1964- Goulart removed and military rule is associated (causes rapid economic growth

BRAZIL

  • 1974- Gen. Geisel becomes pres. Reforms politics and real lows political activity
  • 1982- Brazil stops paying foreign debt (among worlds largest)
  • 1985- Neves is 1st civilian pres. in 21 yrs, dies before inaug. Sarney takes office.
  • (Sarney took office during great economic crisis)
  • 1986- Sarney creates Cruzado Plan which accidentally worsens inflation

  • 1988- New consitution gives less power to president
  • 1989- Mollo first directly elected pres. Since 1960, he becomes a failure
  • 1992- Earth Summit (UN Environmental meeting) held in Rio
  • 1994- Cordoso elected pres. after getting inflation under control
  • 1995- Cordoso plans to work on the slavery problem

  • 1997- Constitution amended so presidents can be re-elected
  • 1998- Cordoso re-elected. IMF sends relief package after failure of Asian stock market
  • 2000- 500th anniversary marked by indigenous protests (oppression, slave labor)
  • 2001- Cordoso abolishes 2 agencies accused of stealing funds through fake projects
  • 2002- Brazil wins 5th World Cup
